EDMUND FITZGERALD was built in Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge, Michigan and launched on 8 June 1958. She served on American Great Lakes and transported iron ore from Lake Superior to the steelworks in the south part of great Lakes. In that time she was the most modern unit of her class. The welding calculations, steel selection and joints were made were carefully, due to the area where she was used and her long hull. But it didn´t save the ship. On 9 November 1975 she set sails with 26000 tons of granulated irone ore. On 10 November the wind velocity on Lake Superior exceeded 130km/h and in the evening 9 m high waves started to flood the holds. At 19.20 h FITZGERALD sunk with whole crew. Fitzgerald was one of few ships that became a hero of a hit. 9 months after the accident Gordon Lightfood composed country ballade "The Wreck of the EDMUND FITZGERALD".
